Landscape History of the Gwent Levels

Walk & Talk at Magor Marsh Reserve

Gwent Wildlife Trust

On a glorious, sunny Sunday afternoon we walked past marshland and through meadows in a landscape carefully returned to how it was hundreds of years ago. A party of 41 including children, we were guided along the boardwalks and paths of the Magor Marsh Reserve by ecologist Roger James and archaeologist Bob Trett.

We learned about certain features of the landscape that they drew to our attention — why it was the way it was — and about the flora and fauna found there.

Although hearing the experts was impossible if you found yourself at the back (the party was much larger than expected!), there were plenty of opportunities to ask questions. Time was set aside at the end for further questions in the Derek Upton Centre by the entrance of the reserve.

We are thankful to Gwent Wildlife Trust and our two experts for giving us such an enjoyable and interesting afternoon. Speaking personally, it has whetted my appetite for further visits to take in the environment. If you would like to pay a visit, see details here.
