About Flood 400
The aims of Flood 400 are to commemorate the 400th anniversary of this event, communicate the historical story of the events, and draw parallels with the tsunami of 2004 in the Far East. Looking to the present, another key aim is to raise the environmental issues we face today and the questions these present for the life choices we all face as individuals and collectively. Learning the lessons of history is a core objective of the project.
The Flood 400 Programme
Throughout 2007 there will be a series of events, including lectures, exhibitions, religious services, a concert, school visits, guided tours and walks. The focus of these events will take place during an extended bank holiday weekend from 25th to 28th May. A major festival will be held which will include a heritage exhibition within the village churches, retelling the events of 1607 and placing them in historical context (locally and nationally). A flower and craft festival (also within the churches) will take place at the same time, and will aim to express through the use of local skill and talent something of our local heritage and the important part water has in people's lives, past and present. Also during the weekend there will be exhibitions from various agencies, such as the Environment Agency, Welsh Water, Caldicot & Wentlooge Drainage Board, Severn Estuary Levels Research Committee, National Tidal and Sea Level Facility, the Meteorological Office, the Countryside Council for Wales, RSPB, Severn Area Rescue Association, Gwent Wildlife Trust, and many more. We are pleased that the staff at Bath Spa University (who have previously researched this subject) have agreed to present some of their research as part of the exhibition.
