Science, environment and other local groups and organisations — Redwick Village Hall

As part of the Flood 400 commemorations it had been decided to stage displays and exhibitions with a scientific and environmental basis in the village hall over the late May Bank Holiday Weekend.

A sub-committee was formed and each member undertook to contact people and organisations who might express an interest in providing relevant material for display for the four days of the weekend.  The response was so good that, at one point, it was feared we would have to turn some groups away!

In the event space was found for everyone and the following organisations provided displays and publicity material, all of which received very favourable comment by visitors over the period.  Over 1000 visitors attended, some of them returning more than once, bringing others with them for a second or even third visit as there was a lot to take in.

Newport City Council – with a large display about the Wetlands Reserve at Uskmouth Asiantaeth yr Amgylchedd Cymru - Environment Agency Wales – who provided a large display and publicity leaflets about their Flood Management Policy and their Floodline Service. They also displayed a local flood map showing the effect of a 1:200 estuary high tide level with a significant breach of the local sea defences.

The Hydraulics Research Establishment, Wallingford – provided a poster and a CD demonstrating some of the studies they have preformed over the years of the effects of various tidal barrages in the Severn.

The Caldicot and Wentlooge Internal Levels Drainage Board – provided full colour displays illustrating their work on the very special landscape areas on both sides of the River Usk.

Gwent Wildlife Trust – provided a large display and abundant publicity material for all their works but, especially, for the local Magor Reserve.

The Glamorgan-Gwent Archaeological Trust – provided an excellent poster display and other publicity material illustrating their work with special reference to the several ancient and mediaeval boats that have been uncovered on the Levels in recent years.

A year of events to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the Great Flood
