Flood 400 Logo

400 years ago, on the morning of 20 January 1606, a great flood inundated most of the South Wales coast, along with parts of Gloucestershire, Somerset and North Devon. It was perhaps the biggest natural disaster to have ever affected the United Kingdom. Hundreds of lives were lost, homes were destroyed, and thousands of acres of farmland were laid waste, depriving local people of their livelihood.

There is some debate as to whether the flood was caused by a storm surge or a tsunami.

We can still see evidence of it today:

A year of events to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the Great Flood

The 400th anniversary fell in 2007, not 2006. How can that be?
